ayurveda njavara facial

Njavarakizhi also known as Shashtikashali Pinda Swedana, is a massage therapy used in Ayurveda to tone and strengthen the muscles and enhance nerve conductivity. Njavarakizhi treatment is a unique therapy that has its origins in Kerala. Njavara is a Malayalam word which is a special type of rice (Oryza sativa) used in the therapy. Kizhi means bolus or a poultice referring to a cloth ball. Navara Kizhi treatment makes use of rice that is cooked and filled in a cotton bolus. Medicated oil is applied to the bolus and this is used to massage the body gently to create sweat. The Navarakizhi in Ayurveda treatment helps to remove toxins from the body and is helpful in providing relief from stress.

Method – Njavarakizhi therapy involves a generous amount of medicated oil being applied to the whole body. The body is then massaged with small cotton cloth boluses filled with cooked Njavara rice. The boluses are dipped in this regenerating mixture of cow’s milk and a brewed herbal decoction, and then applied all over the body to induce sudation (sweat). Njavara in Malayalam stands for the rice that grows in 60 days; Kizhi stands for bolus. Njavara is an indigenous variety of rice grown in Kerala, having medicinal properties.

The patient is made to lie down on the massage table. The bolus containing rice is dipped into herbal oils chosen depending on the patient’s health condition. Depending on the requirements of the treatment, the massage may be on part of the body or the entire body. It is a Swedana procedure that causes sweating. There are seven different postures through which the massage is done for the patient. Once the procedure is complete, coconut leaves are used to remove rice stuck on the body. A herbal oil massage is then given on the entire body. The patient can take a bath 30 minutes after the procedure.

Benefits – Njavarakizhi treatment is highly rejuvenating, nourishing and prepares the individual to bear the stresses and strains of a busy lifestyle. It enhances physical consistency, strengthens the nervous system and improves the overall appearance of the skin. This is a strengthening treatment employed in neurological disorders, rheumatism, arthritis and malnutrition of limbs.
